Here we invite leaders to share what they learned from a moment in their career that helped them and their team go faster.

Part of a team

It’s easy to be carried by the strong narrative that makes heroes of the best players, legends of the winners, and gods of the person with the vision, the leader.

Movies, books, documentaries, and poems have been written to tell their story: The one person who, against all odds, managed to win in one way or another.

Steve Jobs, Oprah Winfrey, Jacinda Ardern, Serena Williams, Tom Brady, Messi, Harry Potter, or Emmeline Pankhurst. The stories of their accomplishments are fresh in our generation’s collective mind and have set the standard of success for years to come.

Yet, as familiar as they might seem, these stories don’t tell the whole story. They don’t even tell the real story.

The truth is, these heroes were not victorious just because of their superior talent, their superhuman performances, or their record-breaking success.

They accomplished so much because they were part of a team.

These teams were built under the highest possible operating standards, where every character was to serve a bigger purpose while creating a culture where the right behaviours needed for success are nurtured and flourished.

Just one person can’t create legendary organisations. You need a team to make winning a sustainable routine. Teams, as it turns out, are the fundamental building block of an organisation.
Teams need leaders, coaches, strategists, talent, and structure. And they also need character, purpose, identity, and a strong narrative. Just one of these attributes, as great as it might be, is not enough to create successful, high-performing teams.

We are going to explore in a series of upcoming articles the making of a team, and how to create teams that achieve high-performing status.  We’ll show you that for every hero superstar performer, there is a group of people with a shared sense of purpose, an aligned sense of value, and a strong connection with each other’s destiny. Many people, one mind.

We’ll use many sports teams as examples as well as stories of organisations from the business world. We want to merge both worlds because we believe that building an environment where people are empowered to achieve great things is both the responsibility of a sport’s coach and a CEO.

When you manage to create the culture, the routines, and the practice for people to become the best version of themselves, not only you’ll have the privilege of working with high-performing teams, your team will always win.
